Prednisolone for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

Steroids are a man-made version of chemicals, known as hormones, that are made naturally in the human body. Steroids are designed to act like these hormones to reduce inflammation. We know that it is common to struggle with your mental health when you have cancer or care for someone with cancer.

  • A type of corticosteroid called prednisolone is usually prescribed.
  • The usual dose varies between 5mg and 60mg daily but occasionally higher doses may be prescribed.
  • If your doctor or health visitor says that your baby is healthy, it’s OK to take prednisolone while breastfeeding.
  • In most cases, this is because the manufacturer will recruit adults to clinical trials in the first instance and therefore the initial marketing authorisation (licence) only covers adults and older children.
  • Because that could be a factor you know, just you’re not used to working.

Corticosteroids can also be used to replace certain hormones that aren’t naturally produced by the body. Taking prednisolone at higher doses for a long time can slow down the normal growth of children and teenagers. You may notice mood changes and mental health problems while taking prednisolone.

You can swallow prednisolone tablets with water – you will probably have a few to swallow at a time. You should also avoid taking indigestion medicines for two hours before and two hours after taking gastro-release tablets.

  • Steroid tablets are different from the anabolic steroids used by athletes and body builders to improve their performance.
  • This can make them more fragile and likely to fracture or break.
  • Your IBD team will give you detailed information about your dose of prednisolone for your inflammatory bowel disease and how often you should take it.
  • Get immediate medical advice if you think you’ve been exposed to the varicella-zoster virus or if a member of your household develops chickenpox or shingles.
